Shifting Gears

Hi, I'm a new rider and just purchased my first bike, a 2012 Ninja 650. I've gotten better on take offs and shifting up, but having some trouble properly shifting down. Can anyone tell me which gear I should be in at certain speeds? If I'm going 40mph, should I be in 3rd or 4th? Also, when I'm coming to a stop and I'm in 4th or 5th gear should I release the throttle, squeeze the clutch and just kick down one gear at a time? Like I said, I'm a new rider and I still have a lot to learn. I just wanna make sure I make it home safely to my family everyday. I appreciate all the help I can get.
