New guy - 1981 GPz550 starting problem

I was gifted my first street bike a week ago. A 1981 GPz550...its been sitting since '98. The trouble I am having is getting it to turn over from the start switch on the throttle. It does turn over and crank very strong if I jump the posts on the solenoid. I have metered the switch so it does work. All the wiring and hoses are plyable and not cracked. I've been through the carbs, petcock, tank, air box, throttle and cleaned them all. I WD40'd the valves and cylinder when the carb bank was off. All of the lights and turns signal work. All fuses are good. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
